At Woolpit Primary Academy, we believe that music should be the beating heart of our curriculum, flowing through and enriching all that we do. Music inspires and motivates children in a truly unique way. It provides the opportunity for personal expression and is key in developing the emotional well-being of our children.
Music education can help spark a child’s imagination and ignite a lifetime of passion.
What does the Music curriculum intend to do?
At Woolpit Primary School we believe that music is a unique way of communication that can inspire and motivate children. It is an opportunity for personal expression and plays an important part in the development and emotional wellbeing of our children. Our children will be taught Music in a way that ensures progression of skills, and follows a sequence to build on previous learning. They will gain experience and skills in a wide range of dimensions of music in a way that will enhance their learning opportunities, enabling them to use music in a wide variety of contexts, ensuring they make progress.
We aim to provide a music curriculum which is broad, balanced and inclusive for all of our children, assisting them to develop a positive self-image and self-confidence. We endeavour to enrich the lives, feelings and emotions of our pupils through the music curriculum, promoting their moral, social and cultural development, all of which result in raising their awareness of the world around them.
How is the curriculum implemented?
Class teaching
We follow a broad and balanced Music curriculum, using the Charanga Music Scheme, that builds on previous learning and provides both support and challenge for learners.
As a school, we promote the enjoyment of music for all pupils. We develop the interrelated skills of performing, composing, listening and appraising music and offer many opportunities throughout the year to perform.
Children learn to play a variety of tuned instruments during their time at our school as part of our class music lessons as well as having opportunities to use their voices to sing a wide variety of genres.
Specialist instrumental teaching
In 4, our children are given the opportunity to learn a musical instrument in more detail. Specialist music teachers from Suffolk County Music Service come into school to deliver whole-class music lessons once a week. The children are given loan of their own instrument for the duration of the year, to take home and practice.
In addition to this we offer additional play-on sessions as well as instrumental teaching in a small range of instruments.
This year, our Year 4 children are learning to play the cornet.
At the end of the year, parents can look forward to watching their children demonstrate their new musical skills in a performance at the Apex in Bury St Edmunds.
Choir
At Woolpit Primary Academy, we have a small but enthusiastic choir of talented young singers, who meet regularly throughout the year to enjoy singing together.
Our choir regularly has the opportunity to perform during our special assemblies to parents and during our celebration services at the church.
What progress will children make?
Our children enjoy and value Music and know why they are learning about it and not just how. It is our aim that, throughout their time at our school, they will understand and appreciate the value of music in the context of their personal wellbeing and the creative and cultural industries and their many career opportunities.
Progress in Music is demonstrated through regularly reviewing and scrutinising children’s work, as well as through pupil perceptions of this subject. Assessment is an ongoing process based on observations of the children working and discussions with them. Audio recordings and photographs can also provide an opportunity for assessment. This enables us as a school to ensure the progression of skills is being followed carefully.
Our Music curriculum contributes to children’s personal development in creativity, independence, judgement and self-reflection. This is evidenced in them being able to talk confidently about their work, and sharing their work with others.
