Religious Education (RE)
How do we teach RE?
We teach RE across the school through ‘The Emmanuel Project’ which is an enquiry-based Religious Education scheme of work for primary schools designed to align with the Suffolk Agreed Syllabus. Children complete one unit of learning per half term. Teachers have the flexibility to teach the units through weekly sessions or through a blocked approach where content is taught through specific RE days or weeks.
Every half-termly unit focuses on a “Big Question” and key concept, structured around an enquiry model which works through the following:
- Engage: Hook pupils’ interest in the topic.
- Enquire: Ask targeted questions about the concept.
- Explore: Investigate through three core threads – scriptural text/narrative, community practice and daily living.
- Evaluate: Weigh up and think critically about the insights gained.
- Express: Allow children to share their own understanding and reflections
What do we teach?
Throughout the year, children undertake 6 units of learning.
In EYFS the units have a predominantly Christian focus, but each unit has an encounter with another religion – Islam, Sikhism, Judaism, Buddhism and Hinduism.
In Years 1 and 2 the children study 3 religions over the 2-yearly cycle – Christianity, Judaism and Islam.
Our RE curriculum in Key Stage 2 is taught across 4 years. Throughout this time, the children continue to study Christianity, Judaism and Islam but they also have the opportunity to broaden their knowledge into other World Faiths such as Humanism, Hinduism, Sikhism and Buddhism.
