At Woolpit Primary Academy, we want every child to develop confidence, enjoyment and a strong understanding of mathematics.

How we teach maths

Our Maths curriculum supports children to become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, develop their reasoning skills and apply their knowledge to solve a wide range of problems. We encourage pupils to explore mathematical ideas, explain their thinking and make connections between different areas of learning.

Children develop their understanding through a combination of practical activities, mathematical discussion and carefully structured learning. We recognise the importance of securing strong foundations in number and calculation, while also providing opportunities for pupils to challenge themselves and deepen their understanding.

Throughout their time at Woolpit, children build their knowledge and skills progressively, helping them to become increasingly confident and independent mathematicians. We aim to create a positive environment in which children are encouraged to persevere, learn from mistakes and recognise that everyone can succeed in Maths.

As a school we use White Rose to support the teaching of Mathematics across the school. Children in Early Years and Key Stage 1 participate in additional Mastering Number sessions daily to support their foundational understanding.
